Canvas Live Conferences are real-time, interactive virtual class meetings that include both instructors and students.  Canvas Live Conferences create engaging learning experiences and help to foster student-faculty interaction in the online learning environment.  Graded activities will accompany Canvas Live Conferences and attendance is required.

Will I have Canvas Live Conferences in my classes?

Yes.  All courses offered in a fully-online modality will have at least one Canvas Live Conference.  Here’s how it works:

  • Early Program Courses:  For courses offered early in your program, Canvas Live Conferences will occur during Week 1 and Week 2 and two additional weeks will be chosen by your instructor to best support you.

  • Later Program Courses:  Canvas Live Conferences will occur during Week 1 within courses offered later in your program.  Instructors in these courses may choose to add additional Canvas Live Conferences.

How does scheduling work?

The instructor will offer three sessions throughout the week, each covering the same content, to provide students with flexibility.  Students will be expected to register for which session they will be attending that week through a quick survey response on Monday.  Various Canvas Live Conference sessions will be offered by your instructor within the following timeframes, simply pick the session which works best for you: Tuesday – Wednesday, Thursday – Friday, and Saturday – Sunday. 

Canvas Live Conferences will typically last between 60 – 90 minutes.  During any week a Canvas Live Conference is scheduled, attendance within one of the offered sessions is a requirement and graded activities will always accompany the Canvas Live Conference. 

What technology will I need to join a Canvas Live Conference?

Students will need a desktop or laptop computer and internet access to join Canvas Live Conferences within Harrison College’s learning management system (LMS) called Canvas.  Canvas Conferences cannot be used on mobile devices. Additionally, earbuds or headphones with a microphone (or external microphone) will be needed in order to hear and be heard.  Webcams are encouraged but not required.  For complete details and step-by-step instructions please log into Canvas and locate the relevant “Module” within your course.
